North Carolina woman forced to be sex slave and tortured in front of her children
A North Carolina woman was held as a sex slave and repeatedly beaten and tortured in front of her two children.
The woman -- who remains unnamed -- was allegedly held against her will at two separate hotels in Pineville, North Carolina where police say “she was forced into sexual acts with random men,” according to a statement from the Pineville Police Department.
The suspects, Thomas Antoine Miller and Shakeeta Lasha Adams, then allegedly physically and mentally punished the woman if she did not meet certain financial quotas.
“The punishments range from verbal abuse, to beatings with a belt, being held under water/ice bath in a bathtub while being strangled, and burned/branded with a hot wire coat hanger. This violence was done in front of her two children and they were beaten as well with a belt at times,” read the police statement.
The
Pineville Police opened up an “extensive criminal investigation” over a
three-week period into human trafficking through interviews, undercover
surveillance, and search warrants at area hotels when the victim came
forward during the investigation asking for help for her and her two
children.
Miller and Adams were arrested for their involvement in the case. Miller, 26, was charged with human trafficking of an adult victim, sexual servitude of an adult victim, assault by strangulation, assault on a child under 12, assault on a female and communicating threats, according to the Charlotte Observer. Adams, 25, was charged with simple assault and is free on bail pending trial.
Police are still concerned that other victims of Miller and Adams could still be out there.
“We want those victims to come forward to us. We also want them to know that there is help out there for them,” the police statement said.
“Our victim in this case and her children had a long road of physical and mental recovery ahead of them. Our victim has been very brave in coming forward and we hope that if there are more victims out there, then they too will be inspired to come forward.”

Former NFL Player Arrested for Staging Fake 'Hate Crime' at His Own Business in Georgia
A former NFL player was arrested Thursday after allegedly staging a
fake “hate crime” by damaging property and painting racial slurs at his
local business in Georgia.
Gwinnett County Police say Edawn Coughman created a “premeditated plan” to get money from his insurance company.
“It appears as though Edawn conjured a premeditated plan to damage his own property, attempt to make it appear as a hate crime, file a claim with his insurance company and sell off the undamaged appliances and electronics,” police said in a statement.
Photos from law enforcement appear to show racial slurs, a swastika and “MAGA” spray painted in different parts of the establishment.
Coughman, 31, has been charged with false report of a crime, insurance fraud and concealing a license plate and has since been released from jail on bond.
According to the detailed statement by police, officers responded to a report of a burglary on Wednesday at the Create and Bake Restaurant and Coughman’s Creamery. The person who reported the burglary said someone was damaging the businesses, according to the statement, and that the suspect was driving a black Chevrolet Silverado with no license plate.
The statement said officers arrived in the area and found the truck leaving the shopping center, realized the driver was Coughman and later learned that he was the owner of the businesses.
Coughman told police that he noticed that equipment was missing and damaged earlier in the day and did not call 911 but did call his insurance company to report the incident. According to the county’s statement, officers and the lead detective learned during the course of their investigation that the damage to the business did not occur earlier in the day, refuting Coughman’s statement.
Inside the businesses, “the smell of the spray paint was very fresh” and the black paint “appeared wet” when officers touched it, police said. The statement also details that police found “cut wires,” vandalized upholstery and a “damaged video surveillance system.” They also claimed to find pry marks on the business’ back door.
The county’s statement said law enforcement searched the truck on Thursday and found a yellow crow bar and cans of black spray paint.
Coughman never played in a regular-season game with the NFL, but was signed on to eight different teams, according to NBC affiliate WXIA

Fla. Teen Allegedly Stole Parents' Debit Card to Fund Murder-for-Hire Plot Against Them (They don't catch the smart ones)
Fla. Teen Allegedly Stole Parents' Debit Card to Fund Murder-for-Hire Plot Against Them
A Florida teenager is facing charges after she allegedly stole her
parents’ debit card and used the money she withdrew to pay two different
people to kill them in a failed murder-for-hire scheme, say officials.
On Tuesday, Alyssa Hatcher, 17, of Umatilla in Central Florida, was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal solicitation for murder, a Lake County Sheriff’s Office arrest affidavit shows.
After being taken into custody, she was transported to the Lake County Jail, where she was processed before being turned over to the Department of Juvenile Justice.
Authorities learned of Hatcher’s botched plan when a student at Umatilla High School told a Lake County Sheriff’s resource officer that Hatcher had given her friend “a lot of money” to find someone to kill her parents, the affidavit obtained by PEOPLE claims.
Investigators quickly discovered that Hatcher had allegedly stolen her parents’ debit card and completed two transactions — one for $503.00 and one for $926.40, “later identified as money given to two different individuals to kill her parents,” the affidavit says.
Hatcher’s boyfriend told investigators he’d seen Hatcher early Monday morning at a “known drug house” where she told him she wanted to murder her mom and stepdad, the affidavit says.
During a recorded interview with investigators at her home, Hatcher allegedly admitted to the plot, according to the affidavit.
She allegedly revealed that she used $100 to buy cocaine and gave $400 to a friend to for someone to commit the murders, the document alleges.

She went on to say that “since the act was never carried out, she
gave the other $900 to a black male to kill her parents,” the affidavit
says.
Upon learning of the allegations against their daughter, her parents, a nurse and a police lieutenant, told authorities they wanted to prosecute for the charges, the affidavit says.
The parents were not identified in the affidavit. Police have not yet identified a motive for the alleged murder-for-hire plot.
Lake County Sheriff’s Sergeant Fred Jones told local station WFTV, “The parents are good people, outstanding citizens. This was just somebody who, for whatever reason, just didn’t want her parents around.”
Confirming that Hatcher’s parents wanted to press charges, Jones told local station WOFL-TV, “When it comes to something like that, I cannot imagine the shock you would be in as a parent knowing that this is my daughter – what my daughter intended to do.”
Saying it was a “sad case,” Jones went on to tell WOFL-TV, “I couldn’t even imagine something like that.”
Hatcher had spent some of her high school career on the cheerleading team, her Instagram account shows.
In June, the teen posted a picture of herself with the caption, “Ruthless.” In another, she wrote, “Rock bottom became the solid foundation on which I rebuilt my life.”

From the Washington Examiner: "Grant has a criminal record for theft and evading arrest, according to Texas court documents reviewed by the Washington Examiner. He was sentenced to eight months in prison for car theft in March, after pleading guilty to stealing a silver 2009 Mazda 6. In 2016, he pleaded guilty and was also sentenced to 18 days in jail for stealing TVs from a Sears in Richardson, Texas. He pleaded guilty to evading arrest in Collins County in 2016."
He Was Wounded in the El Paso Shooting and Lauded for His Bravery. Now Police Say His Heroic Story Isn't True.
Last month, still attached to hospital monitors, 50-year-old Christopher Grant told CNN’s Chris Cuomo how he was shot on Aug. 3 inside of a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. Now, police are saying parts of his story doesn’t reflect what’s on surveillance footage.
In the CNN interview, Grant described seeing the shooter’s face, hearing people prayed in Spanish for their safety, how a Customs and Border Protection officer saved his life and how he attempted to deter the shooter by throwing bottles of soda at his direction.
Grant was indeed shot twice near his rib cage, according to The El Paso Times, and his sister shared on Facebook that he underwent at least two surgeries. “God Bless the families that lost their loved ones, my heart is breaking for them,” she wrote.
Grant was celebrated for his actions, and covered by media outlets nationwide, including a short mention by TIME.
Grant and his family were invited to The White House so that he could be recognized for his alleged act of heroism. As he and his family arrived to meet the President on Monday, the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) arrested him. While it was first reported by the Washington Examiner. Washington D.C.
police confirmed to TIME that a man named Ernest Christopher Grant was detained on Monday. Mug shots of arrests in Texas under the name of Ernest Christopher Grant match images of Grant taken by CNN and shared on Facebook by Grant’s family.
El Paso Police Department (EPPD) spokesperson Sgt. Enrique Carrillo tells TIME that Grant had a warrant for his arrest and was a “fugitive from justice,” but the warrants were not issued by the EPPD and Carrillo could not provide the agency where the warrants originated.
Grant could not be reached for comment and his sister, who attended the ceremony according to her Facebook profile, did not immediately respond to TIME’s request.
A USSS spokesperson confirmed to TIME that a visitor to The White House was arrested on Monday, but would not release the name per protocol. “It was subsequently determined that while the arrest warrant was still active, the agency that issued the warrant would not extradite, at which time the individual was released from Secret Service custody,” the spokesperson said in a statement. He was not charged.
What’s more, the EPPD says Grant’s story about throwing bottles at the shooter doesn’t align with surveillance footage of the events that day.
“Mr. Grant’s actions were captured on video, but they do not reflect his account to the media outlet [CNN],” Carrillo said. “It contradicts his statements, in fact… [H]e did not take any action towards the shooter.”
Carrillo said surveillance footage shows Grant acting in “a manner of self-preservation, as best as I can describe it, and nothing else.”
“I’m not demeaning his actions,” he added.
Carrillo said there was no prior communication between USSS and EPPD about Grant, so Grant’s arrest was not connected to the EPPD detailing what they say are his false statements to CNN. EPPD added that officials only revealed information on what was found in the surveillance footage after Grant was arrested by USSS and reporters began requesting information.
At the Monday White House ceremony honoring five heroic El Pasoans and six police officers who responded to Dayton, Ohio, mass shooting, Grant’s mother stood in for her son to accept a certificate of Heroic Commendation. There, President Donald Trump praised Grant for the actions he described to CNN.
“Chris grabbed — listen to this — soda bottles and anything else in front of him and began hurling them at the gunman distracting him from the other shoppers and causing the shooters to turn towards Chris and fire at Chris,” President Trump said at the ceremony. “Whereby Chris suffered two very serious gunshot wounds, but he is recovering well and we wish him the best, his family is here.”
