FIRST ON FOX: Rep. Cori Bush's campaign funneled thousands of dollars to her new husband for private security services in recent months, records reviewed by Fox News Digital show.

The Missouri Democrat's committee pushed $12,500 to her spouse, Cortney Merritts, between January and the end of March, according to her campaign's newly released filings. During this time, the 'Squad' member also moved $26,000 to the St. Louis-based PEACE Security, which hires several "security operators" with military or law enforcement experience, despite her opposition to them, their website states.

Bush has been among Congress' top spenders on private security, which she said she needs because there have been attempts on her life. Since 2019, she's dropped more than a half million dollars into the personal detail, which primarily has gone to PEACE Security.

Bush and Merritts, meanwhile, tied the knot in February of this year. When her office confirmed their marriage, they said they had been together before she took office in 2021 - more than a year before she added him to her campaign's payroll in January 2022. Last year, he collected $50,000 from her committee while it simultaneously paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to a private security firm.

And despite the security payments, Merritts did not have a private security license as of late February, Fox News Digital reported. Individuals must have a permit to perform security functions in St. Louis and its neighboring St. Louis County, which encompasses Bush's entire congressional district.

Merritts also did not appear in a Washington, D.C. database of licensed security professionals. Bush's campaign did not respond to several prior emails on the matter.

Bush's security payments became a point of contention after Fox News Digital first reported on them in July 2021, prompting CBS News to question her about the cash and whether hiring security was hypocritical while she advocated defunding the police.

"They would rather I die?" Bush asked. "You would rather me die? Is that what you want to see? You want to see me die? You know, because that could be the alternative."

The progressive lawmaker said she would ensure she has security because she has had attempts on her life and has "too much work to do."

"So suck it up, and defunding the police has to happen," she added.

St. Louis' KMOV4 later discovered that Bush had hired two sheriff's deputies, Tylance Jackson and Maurice Thompson, as part of her security.

The discovery led to the termination of Jackson and Thompson, who had failed to get approval for the side gig, St. Louis Sheriff Vernon Betts said at the time.

Bush's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on her husband's new payments.

Covid news – live: Cases soar again in India as doctors warn of ‘new symptom’

3.3k

A new coronavirus strain dubbed Arcturus appears to be driving a surge in Covid-19 cases in India, prompting the country to resume vaccine production and sparking fears it could lead to a rise in cases in the UK and elsewhere.

India on Friday recorded 11,109 new Covid infections, the biggest jump in almost a year. The country’s active case count is now up to 49,662.

The XBB.1.16 strain, a sub-variant of Omicron, has been found in 22 countries, including Singapore, Australia, the UK and the US. Research indicates Arcturus could be one 1.2 times more infectious than the last major sub-variant, making it likely to become the dominant strain.

The spread of the strain, first detected in late January in India, is worrying experts, as it seems to exhibit unique symptoms in children, one of which is conjunctivitis.

The symptoms of the variant include high fever, cough, and “itchy” conjunctivitis or pinkeye, according to Vipin Vashishtha, a paediatrician and former head of the Indian Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Immunisation.

Fears new ‘Arcturus’ Covid variant could become dominant in UK
08:52 , Alisha Rahaman SarkarVirologist Dr Stephen Griffin from the University of Leeds said Arcturus is growing at a faster rate than other variants and is “rapidly outcompeting” others in India. He added that the new variant, which is now spreading globally, is particularly concerning because of limitations in genomic sequencing and tracking, leaving the UK “completely in the dark” after it stopped publishing ONS Covid case figures last month. So far in the UK, Arcturus accounts for just 0.4 per cent of cases, according to the GISAID virus sequencing database – but that proportion is expected to increase considerably.“Arcturus has a growth advantage of about 1.2 compared to what we’ve had recently,” Dr Griffin told The Independent. “It’s conceivable it could outcompete what we’ve had recently but there are other variants in the mix so it’s hard to know which one will become dominant.”Thomas Kingsley reports.Fears new ‘Arcturus’ Covid variant could become dominant in UK

First Victim Loses Life As Largest Fungal Infection In US History Breaks Out In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

100 Percent Fed Up – Billerud, a Swedish company that runs a paper mill in Michigan’s upper peninsula in the city of Escanaba, announced late Thursday that it intended to close the plant for three weeks following a fungal infection outbreak.

Billerud

The closure comes about a month after the outbreak started and, according to the company, will allow for deep cleaning.

Billerud said the temporary mill closure was a “precautionary measure,” yet, according to the Daily Mail, workers complained that Blastomycosis, a fungal infection, was first diagnosed in February. They also noted that the source of the problem still needed to be identified. Initially, Billerud told their employees to wear face masks to keep infection at bay after workers tested positive, showing they were suffering from a blastomycosis outbreak. The first positive cases were discovered in early March.

Face masks were ineffective at stifling the outbreak, and the numbers rose to 21 confirmed cases and an additional 76 probable cases by the second week of April, According to Delta and Menominee Counties public health officials. The health department also confirmed Friday that the first death resulting from the fungal infection had occurred.

Local health officer Michael Snyder, who is employed at the health department, said:

“We were saddened to hear this news. Our heartfelt sympathies and prayers go out to the family, friends, and coworkers who have lost their loved one.”

Billerud Operations vice president at the mill, Brian Peterson, also added his condolences saying:

“Everyone at Billerud is deeply saddened by this news. Anyone who works at our facility is part of our team, and we are keeping this individual, their family, coworkers, and friends in our thoughts and close to our hearts.”

The Michigan paper mill looks to be the epicenter of what could be one of the largest fungal outbreaks in US history.
The name of the person who passed away has not yet been released, but it was a contractor at the mill who died from infection. Currently, twelve people have had to be hospitalized, and close to 100 more are suspected of having cases.
After confirming the death Friday, officials said they were ‘deeply saddened’ by the fatality and expressed their ‘heartfelt sympathies’ for the family. The cases are confined to only those who work at the mill or who have visited the site. There are no cases in the larger community.

Luxury lingerie brand Honey Birdette bills the company as created ‘by women, for women.”

Taking a page out of the Bud Light marketing plan, which led to a nationwide boycott resulting in the reported loss of reportedly over $7 billion in market cap value in recent days, Birdette “celebrated” women by putting a biological man in lingerie in a recent ad.

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Birdette featured a male model in their new “RUBY” 3-piece lingerie set. Model Jake DuPree poses in a red bra, panties, and red matching stockings. The caption reads, “Red curtain moment! @jakedupree stars in the RUBY 3 piece set.”

Why a biological male is wearing a bra, with no breasts to support, is anyones guess.

Fox News reports:

It said, “UPDATE: Honey Birdette fosters an inclusive and diverse environment, and we will continue to use our voice to empower and support the LGBTQ+ community, women, and anyone who wants to feel fabulous in our lingerie.”

It also included a warning for those who don’t approve of the male wearing women’s underwear, stating, “While thoughtful and constructive discussions are important to push culture forward, hate speech and bullying will not be tolerated on our channels. Comments of this negative nature will be deleted.”

The group also added a message of support for the male model, saying, “@jakedupree, you are so talented and have our full support!”

The account also shut off comments for the post.

Biden takes selfie with Irish nationalist Gerry Adams, who was public face of IRA terror group Gerry Adams was president of Sinn Fein between 1983 and 2018

President Biden, during his visit to Ireland this week, took a selfie with a controversial Irish nationalist who had once been banned from British airwaves due to his role as the public face of the Irish Republican Army.

Gerry Adams, who is a former leader of Irish republican party Sinn Fein, took a selfie with Biden on Thursday.

"A presidential selfie," he tweeted.

Adams was president of Sinn Fein between 1983 and 2018. During the height of the IRA’s terrorist bombing campaign in the 1980s and 1990s, as part of its efforts to end British control over Northern Ireland, Sinn Fein acted as the political wing of the IRA.

Adams has always denied membership in the IRA itself, although he has continued to face allegations that he was involved in its terrorist activities. Adams was one of a number of Irish republican officials who were banned from British airwaves by the government of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Adams ultimately played a key role in moving Sinn Fein away from the IRA and helped secure the Good Friday agreement -- which largely brought an end to the terror campaign. He was later arrested in 2014 in connection with a 1972 murder, but was not charged.

Biden has a lengthy history with Adams. The pair have been photographed together before, and Biden was one of a number of senators who reportedly angered the British in the 90s by arguing publicly for Adams to be allowed into the U.S.

The Daily Telegraph reported that Biden wanted Adams to be given a visa in 1994, arguing it would bring him into the ongoing peace process, but that then-Prime Minister John Major’s government were angered by the move -- who did not want him to receive prestige and credibility.

Documents obtained by the Telegraph showed that President Bill Clinton’s ultimate decision to grant Adams the visa left Major so angry he was not able to speak to his American counterpart until he was "in a calmer mood."

Biden, who had once argued against the extradition of IRA terror suspects to face trial in Britain, has faced accusations of being anti-British and those accusations appeared during the Irish trip.Democratic Unionist Party Leader Arlene Foster said this week on GB News that Biden "hates the United Kingdom, I don’t think there’s any doubt about that."

The White House rejected that claim, describing the president’s track record as showing "that he is not anti-British."

"The president has been very actively engaged throughout his career dating back to when he was a senator in the peace process in Northern Ireland and that has involved meetings with leaders of all of Northern Ireland parties from both of the two main communities," Senior Director for Europe at the National Security Council Amanda Sloat said in a press conference. "The UK remains one of our strongest and closest allies and it's difficult, frankly, to think of an issue in the world that we are not closely cooperating with the British on."
