DC police searching for suspect who robbed store, hit officer with car

The suspect was last seen in a black Nissan Versa with an unknown Texas tag

A Washington, D.C., woman on Tuesday stole items from a store before hitting an officer who attempted to stop her with her car, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The suspect stole merchandise from the establishment in the 2000 block of 8th Street, NW at about 10:10 a.m. An employee flagged down a uniformed reserve MPD officer in the area of what had happened. 

But when the officer attempted to stop the suspect, she drove her car into the officer and then fled the scene.

The reserve officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

A surveillance camera captured the suspect in photographs shared by police.

Police are searching for the suspect and are asking the public for help locating her. MPD is offering a reward of up to $10,000 to anyone who provides information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.

Michigan TV Station Director, Staffers Fired After Asking for “Balance” in Coverage of Pride Celebrations

“Pride Month” is over and a day to be proud of, the Fourth of July, is upon us!  But a news director, his assistant and two staffers from WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, Michigan will spend the holiday trying to figure out where to work next.

Over the weekend, some were fired over distributing a memo sent out asking for coverage of pride parades to be covered “balanced” and to show “both sides.”  The others were fired for leaking the memo.  The assistant director that was fired, Amy Fox, was “ordered” to write the memo by the new director, Stanton Tang, who was also terminated.

From the memo cited by TheDesk.net:

“We know that West Michigan is a Conservative area in many ways.  We need to recognize that some stories related to LGBTQ issues are going to be controversial and polarizing in our community. While you personally may not agree with a certain position, people are entitled to their opinions, and they are our viewers.

While you personally may not agree with a certain position, people are entitled to their opinions, and they are our viewers.  We should not cover every Pride event that we learn about. We need to do some work to discern the newsworthy-ness of the event.  If we are covering Pride events, we need to consider how to make the story balanced and get both sides of the issue.”

Apparently, balanced news reporting with both sides of a story is frowned upon when it comes to “pride.”  The other staffers at WOOD-TV were so triggered, they actually staged a “walk-out protest”, according to employees.  The pushback from the station is rooted in reporting the news in an “expansive and inclusive fashion.”  But what it really sounds like is ‘promote pride in a positive light no matter what the real story on the ground may be.’

WOOD-TV is owned by Nexstar Media Group, the largest owner of local television broadcast stations in the country.  Nexstar claims on their website to “foster a culture of diversity and inclusion…so no one feels discriminated against.”  While TheDesk claims this is a “rare instance of a news executive encouraging reporters to sideline stories based on the political affiliations of its viewers,” one could argue it is simply promoting a “fair and balanced” story.  The memo encouraged reporters to refrain from covering every pride event, and rather just focus on the ones that were actually newsworthy.

Kimbrady Carriker, 40, was arrested late Monday evening for fatally shooting 5 people and injuring two children in the Kingsessing neighborhood of Philadelphia.

Carriker, described as a 40-year-old male, was wearing a bulletproof vest and carrying an AR-style rifle, a handgun, and a police scanner.

It appears Kimbrady Carriker is a transgender or a crossdresser based on photos posted to his Facebook page.

According to Carriker’s former roommate, the gunman had “an aggressive approach to some things in life.”

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported:

Sources identified the suspect in Monday’s mass shooting in Southwest Philadelphia as Kimbrady Carriker.

Carriker, 40, of Philadelphia, was arrested after being accused of killing five people and injuring two children in a shooting spree in the Kingsessing section of the city, sources said.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., police responded to gunfire in the area of South 56th Street and Chester Avenue, said Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw. About 10 minutes later, with police following the suspect as he continued to fire a gun, he was cornered several blocks away in an alleyway on the 1600 block of South Frazier Street, she said.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident, police said.

Tina Rosette, 49, said she lived with Carriker for about a year on the 5600 block of Belmar Terrace in 2021. She said he was “really smart, intelligent, creative,” and loved working on computer programs.

She was shocked to hear he could’ve been involved in such a brutal act of gun violence, saying she’d never seen him with a gun before.

”I didn’t even know he had a gun,” she said.

Still, she said Carriker did have “an aggressive approach to some things in life.” One example: She said he sometimes taught young people how to fight, purportedly in self-defense, but didn’t give them much direction about how or when to stop.”

Facebook posts published by the Post Millennial show Kimbrady Carriker supported Black Lives Matter.
