NEW YORK (AP) — At just 7, Blue Ivy Carter is an award-winning songwriter.

Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s daughter won the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s Award at Sunday’s Soul Train Awards for co-writing her mom’s hit “Brown Skin Girl,” a song celebrating dark- and brown-skinned women.

The Carters weren’t at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas to accept the honor named after the legendary Motown songwriting duo Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson. Ivy Carter shares the win with Beyoncé, Jay-Z, St. Jhn and several other co-writers.
This week could get even better for Ivy Carter: Grammy nominations will be revealed Wednesday and “Brown Skin Girl” could earn the young star her first Grammy nomination (Beyoncé has won 23 Grammys and Jay-Z has 22).
“Brown Skin Girl” — which features Beyoncé namedropping Lupita Nyong’o, Naomi Campbell and Kelly Rowland and singing lyrics like, “I love everything about you, from your nappy curls to every single curve” — was also nominated for best collaboration at the Soul Train Awards. Most of the top winners didn’t attend the show, and only three of the 12 awards were handed out during the live telecast: best female R&B/soul artist (H.E.R.), best new artist (Summer Walker) and best gospel/international award (Kirk Franklin).
Chris Brown and Drake’s “No Guidance” — which has spent the last five months, and counting, in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart — was the big winner, picking up song of the year, best dance performance and best collaboration. Lizzo won album/mixtape of the year for “Cuz I Love You” and video of the year for “Juice.”
The awards show, which aired on BET and was hosted by actresses Tichina Arnold and Tisha Campbell, also gave special honors to gospel music icon Yolanda Adams and Songwriter Hall of Famers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, who have worked with Janet Jackson throughout her career and have also crafted No. 1 hits for George Michael, Usher, Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men.

Meghan Markle had a special guest drop by her Windsor home this week.

On Tuesday, Hillary Clinton paid a visit to Frogmore Cottage and met Meghan, 38, for the very first time after being secretly invited to the London residence by the Duchess of Sussex, The Daily Mail reports.

A source confirmed to the outlet that the women shared a hug before spending the afternoon together, where they hit it off and even discussed a letter Meghan wrote to Clinton when she was 11 demanding to remove a “sexist” dishwasher soap advertisement.

“Both women have a lot of admiration for each other and it was a very sweet, warm meeting,” the source said. “They are mutual fangirls!”

Prince Harry and the royal couple’s seven-month-old son Archie also joined the ladies, with Clinton, 72, reportedly getting in some cuddles with the infant, while she chatted about her own grandson, Jasper, who made his arrival in July.

News of their meeting comes a few days after Clinton raved about Meghan while discussing the relentless attacks she’s been receiving from the British tabloids on BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Oh my God, I want to hug her!” Clinton told host Emma Barnett on Tuesday. “I feel as a mother I just want to put my arms around her. I want to tell her to hang in there, don’t let those bad guys get you down. Keep going, do what you think is right.”

The 2016 Presidential candidate — who is on a publicity tour for The Book of Gutsy Women, co-authored by daughter Chelsea, 39 — added that Meghan should be given a break because all she’s done is fall in love and look to raise a family.

“She has made her own way in the world,” Clinton told the BBC. “Then she falls in love, and he falls in love with her, and everybody should be celebrating that because it is a true love story. You can just look at them and see that.”

Clinton added, “You know, it’s not easy. And there are some techniques that can be learned along the way, some humor, some deflection, whatever, which I’m sure she will come to. But it is tough what she is going through. And I think she deserves a lot better.”

Having been in the spotlight for decades, Clinton knows better than most what it’s like to have every aspect of your personal life raked over in public.

In Meghan’s case, the grandmother of three said she believes the criticism has been driven by a combination of sexism and racism, which she called “heartbreaking and wrong.”

“It takes some getting used to having your every move scrutinized and analyzed and, frankly, things made up about,” Clinton said. “I really wish her and her husband the very best because they are struggling to have a life of meaning and integrity in their own terms — and that’s hard enough if you’re just walking around in today’s world, but if you’re on that big a platform it’s really difficult.”

Clinton added: “You know, people don’t choose who they fall in love with — they fall in love. And she is an amazing young woman. She has an incredible life story. She has stood up for herself.”

The former Secretary of State also echoed her sentiments in an interview with The Sunday Times last month, noting that “the way she’s been treated [by the British media] is inexplicable.”

“If the explanation is that she’s biracial, then shame on everybody,” she added, noting that she personally believed the Duchess of Sussex’s race is “certainly part of it.”

Home on the South Side of Chicago on Tuesday, Michelle Obama likened her childhood experience in the 1970s to what immigrant families face in American neighborhoods today.

The former first lady, 55, recalled at the Obama Foundation Summit how her parents — whom she called “magical” for how they instilled her and older brother Craig Robinson with confidence in their own intelligence — moved to a white neighborhood for better schools when she was little.

The city’s South Side was then home to “a million Craigs, Michelles and Baracks,” Obama said: young black children eager to play and learn and grow.

“We were doing everything we were supposed to do — and better,” she said in an on-stage conversation with Robinson. “But when we moved in, white families moved out.”

“I want to remind white folks that y’all were running from us. And you’re still running,” she said.

“Because we’re no different from the immigrant families that are moving in today. … But because we can so easily wash over who we really were — because of the color of our skin, because of the texture of our hair — that’s what divides countries, the artificial things.”

Obama says she grew up feeling “a sense of injustice.”

“You know this when you’re young,” she said. “You know when people are running from you.”


 

 

She remembered school days and playing outside with friends named Rachel and Susan. “There were no gang fights, no territorial battles. Yet, one by one, they packed their bags and they ran from us.

You could feel people disinvesting in you. You could feel it in the schools—”
Added Robinson, “You could feel it in the parks.”

He remembered hours playing basketball at their neighborhood park. “After every game I had to run home and yell up at the window to my mom, ‘I’m alive!’ and then run back to the next game. But each year, you’d find more and more bottles, more glass broken … people didn’t care about where we went to play.”

The summit, held on the campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology, brought students and community activists — from 41 countries and the Obama Foundation’s various leadership and education programs — with thought leaders, artists and cultural leaders including Charles Barkley, Ava DuVernay, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Billy Porter. The day of discussion focused on the theme “Places Reveal our Purpose.”



In the opening session, Obama and her brother looked through family photos and spoke about their roots and the values they learned at their parents’ kitchen table. As if to underscore how far their journey carried them, Obama struggled with one photo to name the room in the White House that was pictured.

A staff member called out that it was the executive mansion’s Old Family Dining Room.
“Family dining room! Lord, that was a long time ago,” Obama replied.

Then, recalling that the photo was taken on Inauguration Day 2013, when husband Barack Obama was sworn-in for his second term as president, Mrs. Obama made clear (once again, in the face of repeated speculation she would someday run for office) that she is done with politics: “The last election. Thank you, Jesus!”

In the free-wheeling and informal conversation, Robinson teased his sister, who spent the year on a global book tour for her bestselling memoir, Becoming. “Everybody knows our business now thanks to that book you wrote,” he said.

“I grew up my whole life as Craig’s sister,” Mrs. Obama countered. “Now the tables have turned! He can’t even get through an airport without someone saying you look like—”
“I can’t go anywhere with this face,” Robinson interrupted. “And then they tell me, ‘Remember in Chapter 6—.’ ”


President Obama, 58, who was closing the daylong summit, said at Monday night dinner for summit attendees that he and the former first lady knew from the start that Chicago’s South Side was the right place for their post-White House foundation — and eventual presidential library.

“It was natural for Michelle and I to say, ‘Well, we should do it in this place,’ where I became a man and where Michelle grew up, and where our children were born.”

Newly released audio exchanged between dispatchers and first responders in Albany Township, Pennsylvania, possibly sheds light onto the deaths of two young siblings found last month by their mother hanging from a basement support beam next to chairs that had been tipped over.In audio obtained by the Morning Call of Allentown, dispatchers alert police to a 911 call from the mother of   8-year-old Conner Snyder and Brinley Snyder, 4.                                                               The dispatcher informs the officers of the situation, saying that the mother, identified as Lisa Snyder, told them Conner was “bullied” at school and “made threats of doing this” before.As the audio continues, the dispatcher relays to responding officers that Conner had specified in his threats that he “didn’t want to go alone.”Both deaths remain under investigation.Snyder refused to comment on the audio when reached by the Morning Call Wednesday. The paper reports that, after her children died on Sept. 26, three days after they were airlifted to a nearby hospital, she updated her Facebook profile with a photo and the saying, “Words scar, rumors destroy, bullies kill.”Both children were found unconscious by their mother, hanging from opposite ends of a wire dog lead with plastic coating on the afternoon of September 23.According to police, the children’s mother returned to their home around 4:30 p.m., finding two dining room chairs tipped over on the floor near her children’s bodies.The children were unconscious and in cardiac arrest when they were found, but medics revived them en route to the hospital. However, on September 26, both children were removed from life support, dying within 14 minutes of each other.                                                                                       A cause and manner of death is still pending.No arrests have been made.Along with their mother, the two siblings lived in the home with a teenaged brother.

Brianna Hill, A Black Transgender Woman, Found Shot To Death In Kansas City

A Black transgender woman was found shot to death in Kansas City, Missouri, on Monday.

Local outlet KCTV5 News reported that Brianna “BB” Hill, 30, was killed on Monday morning allegedly by an unidentified man who is now in custody. Hill, who also spelled her name Breonna Be’Be Hill, was pronounced dead when police arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting.

Kansas City police Capt. Tim Hernandez told KCTV5 that the alleged shooter remained at the scene for officers to arrive. Police are not looking for any more suspects.

George Cherry, a neighbor of Hill’s, told KCTV5 that the death of the transgender woman hit close to home for him as a gay man.

“They are human beings. Quit the violence,” Cherry said. “This shouldn’t be happening to the LGBTQ community. It hurts our families and our community.”





"Brianna Hill is the 19th Black transgender woman known to be killed in 2019.

Hill is at least the 21st known transgender or gender non-conforming person killed this year in the United States, the Human Rights Campaign says. She is the 19th Black transgender woman to be killed, and the third transgender or gender non-conforming person to be killed in Kansas City.

Violence against the trans community reached a high in 2017, according to a Human Rights Campaign report. In 2018, at least 26 transgender people were killed, the majority of them trans women of color.

A 15-year-old Texas girl died by suicide on Saturday, two years after she was rescued from sex trafficking, her family says.
 
Leticia "Letty" Serrano, a former student at Marshall Middle School in Houston, was kidnapped near her school grounds and sold to human traffickers in 2017 when she was just 13 years old, her godmother, Cynthia Rivera, told KTXH.

Although a community search effort eventually located the girl near Moody Park in Houston soon after she went missing, Rivera said part of her goddaughter never came back home.

"We got her back damaged," Rivera said.

Letty's father, Mariano Serrano, also told the station that after his daughter returned, she tried to run away from home multiple times to see the man who had sold her into trafficking.

"She wanted to be with him," he said. "But she also didn't want to hurt her family."

Letty's family celebrated her quinceanera in May 2019, just five months before her tragic death on Oct. 12. Her father told KTXH his daughter locked herself in a bathroom in their home early that morning, and that by the time he reached her, it was too late.

"She died in my arms," he said.

 

Rivera took to Facebook on Wednesday morning to spread awareness about Letty's story and raise funds to cover the cost of the girl's funeral.

"Letty was abducted in 2017 through a man who drugged her and trafficked her," she wrote. "With the help of the community I was able to get her back... the damage was already done and the road to recovery is one of the hardest things for any child to overcome without the right help."

Rivera also claimed that the man responsible was arrested in wake of the kidnapping and that he only spent three days in jail before his release. She added that the man was allegedly seen with another 13-year-old child just days after the incident.

Houston Police Department Vice Division commander Jim Dale told KTXH he requested that Letty's case be reopened in wake of her death.

"She was a victim and somehow her cries fell through the cracks," he said, adding he hoped to get more schools involved in the mass effort to stop the state's child sex trafficking epidemic.

The National Human Trafficking Hotline received 10,949 reports of suspected human trafficking in 2018 alone. Among U.S. states, most were from California, with 1,656 reported cases, followed by Texas, with 1,000. Florida and New York had 767 and 492 reported cases, respectively.

Sex trafficking was the No. 1 reported type of human trafficking, with 7,859 alleged cases. Labor trafficking, the second most reported, trailed behind at 1,249 reported cases. Women were by far the most impacted, with 7,126 female victims compared to 1,137 male victims reported.

Still, many cases of human trafficking go unreported. The Global Slavery Index 2018 estimates that on any given day in 2016 there were 403,000 people living in conditions of modern slavery in the United States, a prevalence of 1.3 victims of modern slavery for every thousand in the country.

Police in California are investigating the role bullying may have played in the death of a 10-year-old girl, who died by apparent suicide on Sunday.

The girl was discovered in a home in Santa Ana by her 9-year-old sister, Santa Ana Police Department Public Information Officer Anthony Bertagna tells PEOPLE.

As part of an investigation into her death, authorities are reviewing her social media interactions amid claims that there were “some rumors” of bullying.

“Obviously, it’s not often that you get a 10-year-old that, at this point, appears to be a suicide,” Bertagna says. “There were some rumors of bullying. We have nothing to substantiate that at this point. We’ve collected all the electronic devices in the family, we’re looking through social media, interviewing her friends, interviewing her neighbors to see what occurred and if bullying was part of that.”

The victim’s family identified her as Allison Wendel to CW affiliate KTLA.

“She was a beautiful little girl full of happiness and she was always smiling,” cousin Bonnie Mesinas said.

Mesinas also organized a GoFundMe page for Wendel’s family that has since raised more than $6,000.

“On October 13 we lost a great little angel,” she wrote. “We would now like to ask for your support to raise funds for the funeral expenses for Allison Ruth Wendel.”

Wendel was a fifth-grade student at Hazard Elementary School, which had crisis counselors on hand Tuesday, a spokesperson tells PEOPLE.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of one of our students,” the Garden Grove Unified School District said in a statement. “Santa Ana police have informed us that they are assessing any and all factors that may have contributed to this tragedy. While the media has reported rumors of bullying, SAPD has not yet concluded its investigation … We are working collaboratively with SAPD, awaiting the results of their investigation … Hazard Elementary School has a longstanding PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) program and takes a proactive approach to promote a positive school culture.”

The district also noted the recent launch of its “Choose Wellness Campaign,” which is aimed at ensuring all students, staff and family members have access to mental health and wellness support.

Should a police investigation find evidence of bullying, Bertagna told KTLA that any potential charges would depend on the age of those involved.

Nursing Home Workers Allegedly Filmed, Egged On Brawls Between Dementia Patients

Three workers at an assisted living facility in North Carolina were arrested after police say they turned elderly residents with dementia into their own personal fight club.

 

Marilyn Latish McKey, 32, Tonacia Yvonne Tyson, 20, and Taneshia Deshawn Jordan, 26, were arrested and charged with assault on an individual with a disability earlier this month, Winston-Salem Police Department told HuffPost.

McKey was charged with two counts, while Tyson and Jordan were charged with one, authorities say.
Police received a tip in June about elder abuse at Winston-Salem’s Danby House — which specializes in caring for Alzheimer’s patients, per its site. Police investigators worked with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services on the accusation.

According to documents sent to HuffPost from NCDHHS, the three employees who worked at the Danby House allegedly encouraged the residents in its “Special Care Unit” to physically fight one another. The employees also egged the residents on while filming the incidents. One of the workers also forcefully shoved a resident.

 
 
In one incident, two residents with dementia, referred to as Resident 8 and Resident 9 in documents, began fighting in Resident 8’s room as three health care workers — identified by authorities as Tyson, McKey and Jordan —watched and recorded it on a phone.

During the fight, the residents fell on the bed, and Resident 9 continued to hit Resident 8. In a cell phone video obtained by authorities, Resident 8 is heard yelling, “Let go, help me, help me, let go” as the staff members continue to record the fight without intervening, say the documents. At one point, a staff member tells Resident 8 to “Stop screaming, (expletive).” Resident 9 continues to hit Resident 8 and begins to choke her. A staff member can be heard encouraging Resident 9, saying “punch her in the face.” While Resident 8 was being choked, a staff member can be heard in the background saying, “You making her turn red,” the documents say.

According to the documents, the video shows one of the employees calling for their supervisor to come into the room. Once off the bed, Resident 9 was still instigating Resident 8, and in retaliation, Resident 8 tries to shove Resident 9 out of the room, but the staff tells her, “Don’t you push her.”

When the supervisor finally arrives, she comes into the room smiling, and does not ask about the fight. Instead, she points a finger at Resident 8 and says, “Stop, you better sit down and stop, go to bed,” say the documents.

One of the workers, who is not specifically identified in the documents, told authorities she recorded the fight because Resident 8 was a “Pain in the butt.”

On a separate occasion, Resident 8 pushed another resident, identified in the document as Resident 10, to the ground. Documents say Tyson, McKey and Jordan were present for that incident as well, and one of them yelled at Resident 8, pushed her forcefully into a room, shut off the lights and told her to go to sleep. The three workers left Resident 10 on the floor until Resident 8 had been pushed into the room The worker who shoved Resident 8 was not specified in the documents.

Danby House’s parent company, Affinity Living, LLC, told Winston-Salem Journal in a statement that it has “a zero tolerance policy for mistreatment” and that “McKey, Tyson, and Jordan were terminated immediately in June when community management was alerted to this situation.” The company said it has implemented additional staff training and “a more rigorous vetting process for all new and existing employees.”

Affinity Living did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

According to the Winston-Salem Police Department, a magistrate gave Jordan a $1,500 unsecured bond and McKey a $1,000 unsecured bond. Tyson was released from custody on a written promise to appear in court.

The women are scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 14.

Not guilty plea from man accused in church wedding shooting

NASHUA, N.H. (AP) — A man accused of storming into a New Hampshire church over the weekend and shooting a clergyman and a bride during a wedding pleaded not guilty Tuesday.

Dale Holloway, 37, of Manchester, is accused of attempted murder, assault and other charges in connection with the Saturday shooting at the New England Pentecostal Ministries in Pelham. He had been released from a Massachusetts prison in December, according to The Boston Globe , after serving time for beating an estranged girlfriend in 2012.

Holloway was held without bail Tuesday. A message was left for a public defender assigned to his case.

Assistant Attorney General Benjamin Agati said authorities believe Holloway acted alone and that they were investigating whether it was connected to an earlier shooting.

Holloway is the stepson of 60-year-old Luis Garcia, who was shot to death Oct. 1 in Londonderry. The groom in the church shooting was the father of the man charged with killing Garcia. Brandon Castiglione, 24, has been charged in his murder and is jailed.

"I don't think I'm comfortable saying it's just a revenge shooting at this point. We are still investigating the other aspects of this," Agati said. "There is some connection that is there. Again, we are investigating what the exact motives are for all the players involved."

Holloway shot two people Saturday morning before wedding guests tackled him and held him down until police arrived at the church in Pelham, a town of about 13,000 near the border of Massachusetts.

The attorney general's office said 75-year-old presiding bishop Stanley Choate, who was shot in the chest, has been upgraded to stable condition. Sixty-year-old bride Claire McMullen, who was shot in the arm, was released. Groom Mark Castiglione suffered minor injuries after being hit in the head by an object.

Agati said Holloway has a criminal record in Massachusetts. According to the court complaint, Holloway was convicted in 2003 in Massachusetts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault with intent to kill. The complaint did not mention the 2012 conviction.

In the court papers for the 2012 case, The Boston Globe reports that Holloway's attorney detailed that his client has endured chronic abuse at the hands of his biological father.

The church remains closed to the public. Holloway's bail hearing is scheduled for Oct. 22.

"Everyone is still in shock because we never imagined it would happen in church, let alone in New Hampshire," said Magalie Felix, a member of the Pelham church.
