Canada and US Investigate Mystery Outbreak of Cyclospora Illnesses

The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are conducting an investigation into an increase in “non-travel related Cyclospora illnesses” that has been spreading throughout the country.

PHAC announced that they are working with public health and food safety partners to figure out how the infections might be spreading in Canada.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, according to the CDC.

“Previous Cyclospora illnesses have been linked to various types of imported fresh produce, including pre-packaged salad mix, basil, cilantro, berries, lettuce, and snow and snap peas,” PHAC wrote on its website.

As of June 30, the agency reported a total of 84 cases of Cyclospora infections in the following provinces: British Columbia (1), Ontario (75), and Quebec (8).

Four people were hospitalized in Canada, but no deaths were reported, according to Food Poison Journal.

“To date, there is no recall or Public Health Notice, the investigation is ongoing,” the outlet added.

In the US, as of June 28, 2022, there were 61 confirmed cases. Six were hospitalized, with no deaths reported.

Thirteen states have reported cases so far.

Cyclosporiasis illnesses are reported year-round in the United States. However, during the spring and summer months there is often an increase in cyclosporiasis acquired in the United States (i.e., “domestically acquired”). The exact timing and duration of these seasonal increases in domestically acquired cyclosporiasis can vary, but reports tend to increase starting in May. In previous years the reported number of cases peaked between June and July, although activity can last as late as September. The overall health impact (e.g., number of infections or hospitalizations) and the number of identified clusters of cases (i.e., cases that can be linked to a common exposure) also vary from season to season. Previous U.S. outbreaks of cyclosporiasis have been linked to various types of fresh produce, including basil, cilantro, mesclun lettuce, raspberries, and snow peas.

CDC, along with state and federal health and regulatory officials, monitor cases of cyclosporiasis in the United States in the spring and summer months to detect outbreaks linked to a common food source. However, many cases of cyclosporiasis cannot be directly linked to an outbreak, in part because of the lack of validated laboratory “fingerprinting” methods needed to link cases of Cyclospora infection. Officials use questionnaires to interview sick people to determine what they ate in the 14-day period before illness onset. If a commonality is found, CDC and partners work quickly to determine if a contaminated food product is still available in stores or in peoples’ homes and issue advisories.

Here’s what we know about Cyclosporiasis:

What causes cyclosporiasis?
Cyclosporiasis is an illness of the intestines caused by a parasite called Cyclospora.

How is cyclosporiasis spread?
The most common way that Cyclospora is spread is by eating food or drinking water that contains the Cyclospora parasite.

Cyclospora is not common on food and is not in drinking water in Canada.

However, food can be a source of cyclosporiasis for Canadians when imported from countries where Cyclospora is common. Foods imported to Canada that have been linked to the Cyclospora parasite include:

• basil
• cilantro
• raspberries
• blackberries
• mesclun lettuce
• snow and snap peas
• pre-packaged salad mix

Cyclosporiasis is unlikely to spread directly between people because the parasite can only infect others once it leaves the body through feces. To be able to spread, the parasite needs to be outside the body for about 7 to 15 days.

Only humans, and possibly primates, can be affected by Cyclospora. Therefore, cyclosporiasis does not spread between humans and animals.

If you have already had cyclosporiasis, you can get it after recovery if you are exposed to the parasite again.

Where is it found?
Cyclospora can be found in sewage and untreated water. It is found worldwide, but is most commonly found in tropical and subtropical areas, such as:

• Peru
• Cuba
• India
• Nepal
• Mexico
• Guatemala
• Southeast Asia
• Dominican Republic

How does food and water become contaminated?
The Cyclospora parasite gets in sources of water when feces from infected people enter the water supply. Food can then become contaminated when this water is used:

• on crops
• in food processing and packaging

Foods can also become contaminated from infected farm workers or food handlers. This is when proper sanitation techniques are not used, such as:

• hand washing
• gloves or other barrier
• avoidance of cross-contamination

A video showing a young child cussing and taking a swing at police officers made its rounds on the internet Monday, giving a picture of the general disrespect for Police in the Minnesota capitol. 

In the video, you can hear the child saying, “F*** off b****!” 

.

You can see the child swinging at the officers as one of them backs away. The child, among a small group of barely clothed children on the street corner, can be heard repeating the profanity many times. 

The older child in the group encourages the youngster to continue his disrespectful behavior while he is heard using the slur “oreo headed” directed at the cops.  

According to the Daily Mail, the St. Paul, Minnesota, officers were in the area to serve a search warrant related to a recent murder. The area has seen a considerable spike in crime since it was the epicenter of the George Floyd riots in 2020. According to some sources, crime in the region has risen as much as 58% in the last two years. 

A negative sentiment regarding police has only grown, as the state’s twin cities are among those to “defund police” in response to George Floyd’s death. 

The video of the children drew lots of attention as it went viral on Twitter Monday. 

“It’s normal to a boy who has been told that his uncle or dad was murdered by the boys in blue. Totally normal,” said one user, who echoed the local sentiment about the police. 

One user, Dr. Jesse Livermore LL.M.,Ph.D., said, “What we have here is a failure to parent.” Livermore added a short clip of adults acting violently, implying that this could be the future of the children in the original video. 

Another person on Twitter said, “This is so pitiful. Absolutely sad that a person ( not parent- because obviously none of that is going on) could teach their child to act like this. It is a learned as much as it is allowed!!”

The majority of respondents to the video were similar, pointing to the children’s actions as learned behavior.

One user said, “Children who act like that live in an environment where their adults act like this on a regular basis.”

“Unfortunately it’s becoming quite normal. Kids reflect what they see, what they hear. Wokeism and political correctness has taught them to demand, to curse, to resist, to hate, to disrespect. Rules of civilized behavior were jettisoned by modern liberalism a decade ago,” said another person.

New NYC PSA on “What to Do in a Nuclear Attack” Instructs Citizens to “Get Inside, Stay Inside, and… Follow Media” For Updates – “Officials” Will Notify You “When it’s Safe”

On Monday, the city of New York launched a new public service announcement (PSA) that provides guidelines about what residents should do in the event of a nuclear attack.

Unfortunately, New Yorkers who watch the PSA will likely be severely ill-prepared should a nuclear weapon detonate in their vicinity, as the video provides little in the way of specifics or useful information. Instead, the short clip instructs citizens to follow a rudimentary 3 step plan that leaves them completely reliant on the powers that be to come to the rescue.

According to the PSA, New Yorkers should 1) “Get inside” 2) “Stay inside” and 3) “Stay tuned” – or, as the narrator clarifies, “follow media” – in the event of a nuclear attack. After walking through the steps, the narrator hammers home the last point by commanding that the audience “don’t go outside until officials say it’s safe” to do so.

The video does not address what to do if one requires medical attention or food.

Sounds awfully similar to another step-by-step process that has been pushed recently – wasn’t get inside, stay inside, and don’t come out until the experts deem you can the basis of Covid lockdowns?

Wash. Rinse. Repeat. However, this time we are talking about a nuclear attack – something much more deadly than the fear-porn peddling Covid cultists could ever hope for with the virus.

But, instead of preparing the public for the horrific scenario, the lack of relevant information in the NYC PSA aims to create dependent masses who are reliant on the experts. And, it’s at a time when we are knee-deep in a proxy war with a country that possesses over 4,000 nuclear warheads.

It’s no coincidence this type of PSA is being released with what’s going on in Europe and the Pacific – whether it be to stoke fears or because of a legitimate, burgeoning threat. Nevertheless, the likelihood of a nuclear attack hitting NYC is currently slim to none, even according to the NYC Emergency Management Department, which put the chances of a strike at “very low.”

But, according to NYC’s Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol, the threat of a nuclear strike is “imminent.”

Come again? Iscol either doesn’t know what the word imminent means – “about to happen” – or he knows something we don’t – let’s go with the former.

Iscol issued a statement along with the PSA’s release:

“As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it is important that New Yorkers know we are preparing for any imminent threats and are providing them with the resources they need to stay safe and informed.”

Despite claiming that the department is “providing resources” to inform the people, this is simply not the case. Arguably, the only useful bits of information provided in the entire video are instructions to “get clean immediately” and “bag and separate clothing” if you were outside during the blast.

“If you were outside after the blast, get clean immediately. Remove and bag all outer clothing, to keep radioactive dust or ash away from your body,” the PSA explained.

Surely, there is more useful information that could be shared – for example, the PSA tells people to shelter inside and avoid windows. It does not, however, tell them to seal off all gaps and exits to keep radioactive materials out of the building – something that’s necessary if an individual is planning on sheltering in place for an extended period, even if it’s just a few days. But, no. All New Yorkers get from their emergency preparedness department is essentially to ‘sit tight for instructions and don’t ask questions.’

In other words, relying on the ‘officials’ will seemingly get you nowhere, and fast. A quick google search would do more to educate than the new PSA.

Making things even worse, the narrator of the video has a shockingly glib attitude toward the catastrophic situation she is describing. In just one example, she opens the video by stating “so, there’s been a nuclear attack,” as if it’s something that happens daily, before telling the watcher “don’t ask me how or why – just know that the big one has hit. Ok?”

She then rolls into the step-by-step explainer by nonchalantly saying “so, what do we do?”

As usual – Don’t ask questions, the experts will take care of it. It’s for your health.

After instructing the audience to remain dependent on the experts for direction yet again, she closes the PSA on an equally glib note, telling the audience: “All right? You’ve got this.”

Beach in Iowa closed after brain-eating amoeba confirmed in Missourian

Symptoms of Naegleria fowleri include seizures and hallucinations

A rare brain infection has led Iowa officials to close a Taylor County beach.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said the temporary closure is a precautionary response to a confirmed infection of Naegleria fowleri in a Missouri resident who had recent potential exposure while swimming at the beach at Lake of Three Fires State Park.

Testing to confirm the presence of the "brain-eating amoeba" is being conducted in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and could take several days to complete. 

The department wrote that it is working closely with the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services and would share updates as test results become available.

No additional suspected cases are under investigation in Iowa.

In its own statement, The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services wrote that the Missouri patient is currently being treated for primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) in an intensive care unit of a hospital.

It said the source of the patient's exposure is being investigated and that local and out-of-state activity are being considered. 

The only other case identified among a Missouri resident occurred in 1987 and no other suspected cases of PAM are being reviewed there.

"These situations are extremely rare in the United States and in Missouri specifically, but it’s important for people to know that the infection is a possibility so they can seek medical care in a timely manner if related symptoms present," Dr. George Turabelidze, Missouri’s state epidemiologist, said in a statement.

Naegleria fowleri (commonly referred to as the "brain-eating amoeba" or "brain-eating ameba"), is a free-living microscopic ameba*, (single-celled living organism). Since 1962, only 154 known cases have been identified in the U.S.

PAM is not contagious, but can be life-threatening.

Naegleria fowleria, the free-living microscopic single-celled living organism that causes PAM, is commonly found in lakes, rivers, hot springs and soil. 

It usually infects people when contaminated water enters the nose and the amoeba travels to the brain.

In very rare instances, infections may also occur when contaminated water from other sources enters the nose, but a person cannot be infected from swallowing contaminated water.

Symptoms of infection include severe headache, fever, nausea, vomiting, stiff neck, seizures, altered mental status and hallucinations.

Ninja “is the most dangerous” variant yet and serves as “a strong reminder the COVID pandemic isn’t over,” the Daily Beast warns, in an article syndicated by Yahoo News on Friday.

While health practitioners around the nation have been fired, suspended or revoked of their medical licenses for treating patients with Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine, medications that effectively treat COVID-19, experimental gene-editing COVID “vaccines” have proven to provide no immunity against the transmission of the manmade virus.

Yet, “vaccines and boosters are still the best defense,” the Daily Beast reports.

“There are even Omicron-specific booster jabs in development that, in coming months, could make the best vaccines more effective against BA.5 and its genetic cousins,” the publication notes. “BA.5’s widespread mutations made the subvariant less recognizable to all those antibodies we’ve built up from vaccines, boosters and past infection. BA.5 has been able to slip past our immune system, ninja-style, contributing to the rising rate of breakthrough cases and infections.

“The more additional jabs you get on top of your prime course, the better protected you are. Arguably the best protection results from two prime jabs of the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer or Moderna plus a couple boosters.”

The left-wing outlet blames the rising rate of breakthrough cases and new variants on the “stubborn anti-vax minority.”

“In the U.S., for example, the percentage of fully vaccinated has stalled at around 67 percent,” the publication notes. “So COVID lingers, 31 months after the first case was diagnosed in Wuhan, China.”

In reality, the COVID vaccines are creating variants, contends Dr. Ben Marble, the founder of MyFreeDoctor who has treated over 300.000 COVID patients.

“All the different variants, they are created by the C-19 fake vaccine poison — that’s why they exist,” Dr. Marble told the Gateway Pundit in an exclusive interivew. They wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for the mass use of these gene-editing fake vaccines. A lot of people are getting really sick. Whose getting really sick? Of course, the people who took the shots. The people who have gotten three and four shots, they are the ones filling up the hospitals. An overwhelming majority of hospitalized people with COVID are people who took the shot. Unvaccinated people don’t get that sick. The bottom line is the more doses of the poison shot you’ve taken, the sicker you are going to be and the more likely you’re going to die soon.”

Mass vaccinating during an outbreak always create mutations, Marble argued.

“All immunologists know you are never supposed to mass vaccinate in the middle of the pandemic. Ideally, you do it way before the pandemic ever starts. Trying to do it during the middle of a pandemic guarantees it’s natural selection,” he said. “The organism has to mutate in order to survive and if it doesn’t mutate then it dies off. So, it will try different mutations until one survives and keeps getting transmitted. Suddenly, you have a new variant. The evolutionary selective pressure of the fake vaccines forces the actual virus to mutate again.”

Marble suspects the Omicron variant, like COVID-19, was man made and released.

“This is bioterrorism. Some of the mutations are so strikingly different. The Omicron variant was so slightly different it may have been a separately released bioterror event as opposed to naturally appearing from selective pressure and the mass vaccination,” he continued. The original  SARS 2 virus was a bioterrorism weapon was clearly released and man made by Fauci the gain of function. They released it on purpose. Every COVID death is a murder by Fauci and friends.

“The Great Reset is actually a plan to use fake vaccines to cull the human herd and that’s what they’re doing. We are witnessing a great mass genocide. The problem is the mass formation psychosis. The growing dominance of two super-infectious Omicron subvariants is threatening to exacerbate California's coronavirus wave, but experts and officials say there are sensible steps residents can take to protect themselves.

Taking preventative measures is especially important now, as the two strains in question — BA.4, and especially BA.5 — have shown the ability to reinfect even those who recently contracted an earlier Omicron subvariant.

"This is one of the biggest implications of BA.5: A prior infection, including an Omicron infection as recent as last month, no longer provides robust protection from reinfection," Dr. Robert Wachter, chair of UC San Francisco’s department of medicine, wrote on Twitter over the weekend.

BA.5 made up an estimated 53.6% of new cases nationwide for the weeklong period that ended Saturday, according to the latest figures from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A month ago, the subvariant was thought to be responsible for a bit less than 10% of new cases.

“BA.5 is a different beast with a new superpower: Enough alteration in the spike protein that immunity from either prior vax or prior Omicron infection (including recent infection) doesn’t offer much protection,” according to Wachter.

Here are some steps experts and officials say you can take to help ward off these latest versions of the coronavirus:

Vaccination basics

Experts are urging people to get up-to-date on their vaccinations, and that includes getting a first booster shot, or second booster if eligible. Vaccinations and booster shots have been key factors in keeping hospitalizations relatively modest for now.

According to the latest available data from the California Department of Public Health, unvaccinated individuals were more than five times more likely to get COVID-19 than their vaccinated-and-boosted counterparts. They were also 7.5 times more likely to be hospitalized and 14.5 times more likely to die from the disease.

Currently, the CDC recommends a second booster for anyone 50 and older, as well as immunocompromised people 12 and older, at least four months after a first booster.

Children under the age of 5 are now eligible to be vaccinated.

While the value of vaccinations and boosters "in preventing a case of COVID, or preventing transmission, is now far less than it once was,” the shots remain “hugely valuable in preventing a severe case that might lead to hospital/death,” Wachter wrote on Twitter.

Reformulated boosters tweaked to add protection against the newest mutations of Omicron are also expected to roll out this fall.

But there remain questions about how available that formulation will be, considering that Congress has not yet approved billions of dollars needed for pandemic-control efforts, including money to preorder vaccinations.

That rollout also will likely be delayed until November to incorporate a vaccination formula designed against the more recent Omicron subvariants, rather than the oldest version, which scientists fear would be relatively obsolete by then.

Some eligible residents may be wondering whether they should delay getting their second booster until the updated shots are available. For those over the age of 50, "I'd say no — there's too much COVID around and evidence of benefit from boost #2 is persuasive," according to Wachter.

"If the new booster is highly effective (not guaranteed), I doubt that getting a second boost now will block you from getting [a] bivalent boost in fall," he wrote.

Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a UC San Francisco infectious-disease expert, also said his "advice is to go ahead and get” a booster now, rather than waiting.

Masks

While masks are no longer required in most indoor public places statewide, many experts say they continue to offer a worthwhile layer of protection.

California officials have consistently urged residents to use face coverings in public interior settings, including stores, restaurants, theaters and family entertainment centers. Los Angeles County has gone a step further and still requires face coverings on public transit, including ride-sharing vehicles, and in indoor transportation hubs.

"As families gather for summer barbecues, vacations and camp, the best way to avoid disruptions to summer plans is to be sure that everyone is up-to-date on vaccines, to wear a mask when indoors around others, wash hands frequently, and to stay home and away from others when sick," L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said this week.

Gatherings

Outdoors gatherings are preferable to indoors. If you must gather inside, make the setting as well-ventilated as possible by opening doors and windows. Wearing masks also offers an additional layer of protection, officials say.

Health experts also recommend using rapid tests to check infection status as close to the start of a gathering as possible — especially if older people or those with underlying health conditions are present, or if attendees have frequent contact with vulnerable people.

"To do indoor gatherings safely, it’s really about good masking (and no indoor eating) and ventilation. Adding pre-event rapid testing offers additional protection," Wachter wrote.

Another Children’s LGBTQ Drag Queen Advocate Charged With Child Pornography

One of Pennsylvania’s popular drag queens, an LGBTQ+ youth adviser, has been charged with 25 counts of child pornography; he allegedly obtained dozens of photos and videos of nude underaged boys performing sex acts.

According to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, Brice Williams, the drag queen Anastasia Diamond is reported to have downloaded dozens of photos and videos of underaged boys performing sex acts between May and December 2020.

A FOX 43 report said that the child pornography “showed genitalia and boys performing oral sex” and were linked to Williams’ email address and phone number.

Williams has been celebrated in the state’s trend of over-sexualizing children through public and private venues. He has been a prominent figure in the state’s focus on celebrating alternative lifestyles and transgender rights. 

The Patriot-News praised the drag queen last year for being a local activist who spreads “pride” all year long.

“Williams, who uses both masculine and feminine pronouns, is HIV medical case manager at Keystone Health Center in Chambersburg, but this month will join GLO Harrisburg, a center that offers a ‘safe space’ for LGBTQ+ youth of color. There, he’ll continue HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness work, while working with LGBTQ+ youth,” the outlet reported.

The “safe space” LGBTQ+ youth program, which opened in November 2019, offers a “teen clinic” once a week “for ages 14 to 21, regardless of gender or sexual identity,” according to PennLive/The Patriot-News.

The University of Pennsylvania Medical Center (UPMC) runs the youth center. Its mission is “To foster inclusive communities and holistic well-being for LGBTQ+ people through social, educational, and cultural engagement.”

According to FOX 43, Williams was also awarded the 2020 Rising Star Award from the LGBTQ Center of Central Pennsylvania for his activism.

A statement from UPMC said Williams had been fired.

“UPMC’s immediate concern is the health and well-being of our participants who utilize the services provided at GLO,” UPMC said. “Upon notification of the circumstances surrounding the case, the individual was terminated.”

“We are fully cooperating with authorities throughout the investigation,” the statement added. “We have no reason to believe that this individual was at any point alone on the GLO premises with a participant without other staff members present.”

According to The Glinner Update, Williams is “at least the seventh man who is either a drag queen or a sponsor of drag queens to be arrested for pedophilia offenses in recent years”. 

Other arrests include Brette Blomme, best known for his role as president and CEO of Cream City Foundation, a fiscal sponsor of the Milwaukee chapter of Drag Queen Story Hour. Also, Albert Garza, a “Drag Queen Storytime” reader to children at the Houston Public Library.

National Education Association teachers union proposes resolution to change 'mother' to 'birthing parent'

The National Education Association proposed a resolution that would change the word "mother" in contracts to "birthing parent" for the purpose of being inclusive to the LGBTQIA+ community. 

The resolution would be voted on Wednesday by the Representative Assembly (RA), comprised of 6,000 educators, in Chicago as well as virtually. NEA's resolutions represent the teachers' union's opinions and beliefs. It was unclear whether the resolution passed. Fox News Digital reached out to the NEA for comment and asked whether the resolution passed but did not immediately receive a response.

"Using this contract language, members need not worry about how a Board of Education/solicitor defines ‘maternity leave,’ ‘mother,' and/or ‘father’; the language is an inclusive reflection of how LGBTQIA+ members build families," the proposed resolution said.

These resolutions are known as "new business items" (NBI) are proposed by delegates. It takes 50 delegate sponsors to bring the NBI to the RA floor for debate and then to a vote, according to Education Week.

Tiffany Justice of Moms for Liberty told Fox News Digital that she is now calling the NEA the "K-12 Cartel" because they are holding parents and children hostage to a radical agenda. 

"We believe in American teachers, and we don't believe that the lack of focus that the union has on children is represented," she said.

"Normal people don't use the term chestfeeding or birthing person or any of this stuff," Nicole Neily of Parents Defending Education said. "I think it just further underscores how completely out of touch the teachers' unions… are from the concerns of normal parents."

"It's horrifying," she told Fox News Digital. 

Elana Fishbein from No Left Turn in Education said the proposed resolution represents how the left wants to destroy the family. 

"They are arrogant. They are dismissive of the family, the parents. It's beyond Orwellian. Even in science fiction, I don't know if you can have such a script of complete destruction of human society," she said.

NEA delegates struck down a proposed resolution that would support a "national policy of mandatory masking and COVID vaccines in schools." A similar NEA resolution was proposed last year and was also scrapped by delegate voters. 

Past year's resolutions included support for reparations.

"The Association acknowledges that both historical and current practices have systematically advantaged and privileged people of White European ancestry while disadvantaging and denying rights, opportunities, and equality for people of color," a resolution on racial justice said. 

Another resolution called for educators to fight back against "institutionally racist systems."

"The National Education Association believes that, in order to achieve racial and social justice, educators must acknowledge the existence of white supremacy culture as a primary root cause of institutional racism, structural racism, and white privilege," the resolution said. 

"The Association believes that school districts must provide training in cultural competence, implicit bias, restorative practices and techniques, and racial justice," it continued. 

One resolution called for the protection of the rights of the accused in child abuse cases. "Any such allegation should be investigated and resolved immediately without name disclosure," the resolution on allegations against employees said. "The National Education Association believes education employees should be protected from allegations of child abuse made in bad faith."

England: Excess Deaths on the Rise But NOT Because of COVID – Experts Call for Investigation

The death toll in England and Wales continues to rise, even though Covid-related deaths have dropped.

As a result, health experts have requested an immediate investigation into the source of the rising non-Covid excess death.

Recent data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed 1,540 excess deaths in the week ending on June 24. However, only about 10% of those deaths were caused by Covid-19, the Telegraph reported.

Health experts are still looking for answers and have called for an urgent investigation. They believed that the pandemic response, lack of access to healthcare, and even the cost of living crisis might be to blame.

“Before the end of March, deaths in England and Wales were lower than usual this year despite hundreds of people dying from Covid. Yet in the last three months, the situation has reversed, with overall deaths rising even though Covid deaths have been falling,” the news outlet added.

‘The reality is going to be quite complex’

Prof Paul Hunter, professor in medicine, at the University of East Anglia, said some of the excess could be people whose health was weakened by Covid. The infection is known to increase the risk of stroke and heart attacks. But he warned that there may be other more complex factors at play.

“Some might also be down to other impacts of the pandemic, such as problems in accessing health care, delayed referrals for treatment and then things related to the restrictions we lived under, such as reduced activity and sedentary lives,” he said.

“I think the reality is going to be quite complex but it’s something we do need to be aware of and actually try and understand.

“We know there is a relationship between excess deaths and deprivation so maybe the current financial situation we are in is exacerbating that.

“There is despair from your livelihood disappearing up the swanny. It doesn’t have to lead to suicide, chronic stress can lead to all sorts of problems.”

Dr Charles Levinson, the chief executive of the private GP company DoctorCall, also called for a government inquiry into what was causing so many deaths at home.

The ONS reported 752 excess deaths in the home in the latest week, 30 per cent more than usual, and more than hospitals and care homes put together.

“This is exactly why a proper government investigation is required,” he said. “This is not just displacement from hospitals… I do not understand how this is not being properly discussed.”

Dr Levinson added: “The reasons behind these horrific numbers are complicated and none of us fully understand them, so that is exactly why there should be an urgent and comprehensive Government inquiry.

“If anything, the situation seems to be worsening. Considering the relentless focus on one virus for more than two years, requesting answers from Government on thousands and thousands of non-Covid excess deaths is entirely reasonable.”
