2 day care workers charged after video shows child thrown
JIM SALTER,Associated Press14 minutes ago
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Charges have been filed against two Missouri day
care center workers after surveillance video showing a 3-year-old girl
being thrown against a cabinet went viral.
The woman accused of throwing the girl, 27-year-old Wilma Brown, was
charged with felony child abuse on Thursday in St. Louis County.
Relatives said the girl sustained a head gash that required seven
stiches during the incident on Feb. 1 at Brighter Day Care and
Preschool.
The girl's family said they were initially told the girl fell, but
five days later watched surveillance video with the center's director
that showed a worker throwing the child into a cabinet.
A warrant has been issued for Brown's arrest. The only telephone listing for someone matching Brown's name and age was unlisted.
Prosecutors also charged 22-year-old Ariana Silver for a separate
incident on Feb. 27 that was also allegedly captured by surveillance
video. Charging documents allege Silver squeezed a 4-year-old girl's arm
and punctured her skin, and then carried the girl by her foot
.
Silver is jailed on $50,000 bond. Jail records don't show whether she
has an attorney, and she doesn't have a publicly listed home phone
number.
Both women have been fired, according to Timothy Smith, an attorney for the day care center.
Smith said the center is cooperating with investigators and "has
provided exemplary, high quality educational and child care services to
thousands of children and their families for more than a decade." The
attorney said teachers and staff are properly trained, and the center
works to provide a safe environment.
Daycare employee fired after being caught throwing three-year-old into a cabinet on video
Elizabeth Di Filippo,Yahoo Canada Style19 hours agoParents are outraged after video from a Missouri daycare reveals an employee throwing a child against a cabinet.
On Feb. 1, cameras at Brighter Day Daycare and Preschool in St.
Louis, Mo. recorded footage of an employee grabbing a three-year-old
girl by the arm, dragging her away from a table and throwing her into a
cabinet. The child sustained injuries and was taken via ambulance to
hospital and received seven stitches for a head wound.
According
to Fox 2 News, the parents of the girl, who wish to remain nameless,
received a note from the daycare informing them of her injuries saying
that “she fell.”
The true cause was determined five days later when the parents
reviewed the daycare’s video surveillance with the daycare director, who
claimed to have not seen the footage.
After viewing the shocking footage, the family obtained an Jennifer Hansen, an attorney.
“In no world did this family have any idea that what was called a
fall was actually an assault until they came to see that video,”
said Hansen on behalf of the family to reporters. “One of the more
egregious aspects of this case is that the daycare director told the
family that she did not watch the surveillance tape until the family was
with her.”

According to Hanson, the daycare failed to take the initiative to review the footage or investigate the injury.
“The daycare could’ve reviewed that footage at any time,” Hanson
continued. “They didn’t and they allowed the day care worker who
assaulted this little girl, to continue to work at the facility for five
additional days.”
The daycare has since dismissed the employee, while local police and
Missouri child care inspectors continue to investigate the incident.

Although disturbing, Fox 2 News reports this is unfortunately not the
first report of abuse from the daycare. Previous investigations into
the daycare reveal a May 2018 report of a daycare employee “slam a child
on the cot” while a third teacher was “holding a child by his wrist,
dragging him across the room.”
In light of the unearthed reports, the daycare released the following statement, denying any misconduct through an attorney:
“All teachers and staff are properly trained and extremely qualified.
Providing a quality education in a safe environment is of the utmost
importance to our teachers and staff,” the statement began.
“It has
always been our policy to notify the proper authorities and to fully
comply with any investigation. We have and will continue to follow said
policy.”
Mom Allegedly Killed Baby, Threw Child Off Balcony Before Jumping
A 24-year-old California mother allegedly dropped her 18-month-old
toddler off a second-story balcony, then jumped herself and landed
head-first as police and neighbors watched on Tuesday.
Inside the woman’s apartment, authorities then located a nearly
7-month-old female infant who was “unresponsive and not breathing,”
according to a news release from the Upland Police Department.
The infant was later declared dead from her unspecified injuries.
The mother, identified in jail records as Tierra Rose Ortega, and the
toddler both were airlifted along with the infant to Loma Linda Medical
Center. The toddler was diagnosed with a broken foot and is listed in
stable condition.
Ortega was treated for facial injuries and released.
She was arrested and charged with suspicion of murder, attempted
murder and assault of a child younger than 8 years old causing death,
detective Richard Madrid tells PEOPLE.
“As far as motive and all that stuff, we don’t have one,” he says. “It’s still under investigation.” • Want to keep up with the latest crime coverage? Click here to get breaking crime news, ongoing trial coverage and details of intriguing unsolved cases in the True Crime Newsletter.
Police had not previously been called to Ortega’s Upland apartment
before they were summoned by a neighbor’s 911 call reporting a child’s
screams around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Madrid says.
While on the line with the emergency dispatcher, the caller “saw the
mother of a 1½-year-old child holding the child over a second-story
landing,” according to the police statement. “The mother proceeded to
release the toddler, who fell to the ground below.”
A neighbor, Yolanda Tapia, said “she was screaming, and then she
threw something. I never thought it would be a baby,” reports Los
Angeles TV station KNBC.
Police say Ortega’s husband was away at work at the time, according to the outlet.
Arriving officers saw the toddler on the floor, and watched Ortega
herself jump from the balcony as they approached, “landing head first,”
police said.
“As officers were providing the child and mother first aid,
additional officers conducted a safety sweep of the mother’s apartment,”
police said. “In the apartment, they located a 6-to 7-month-old female
infant unresponsive and not breathing.”
After transport to the hospital, “Unfortunately, the infant female succumbed to her injuries and passed,” police said.
Ortega currently is being held without bond in the West Valley
Detention Center, jail records show. Those records do not indicate if
she had obtained an attorney who could speak on her behalf.
MELBOURNE, Fla. — A Florida dog groomer was arrested Monday after officials said he maimed a local veteran's service dog, breaking the animal's tail so badly it had to be amputated.
James Corell Suthann, 37, was charged with one count of animal
cruelty and released from the Brevard County Jail Monday on $2,000 bail.
The charge stems from a Feb. 6 incident, captured on video at
Groomingdales Pet Spa in Satellite Beach, Florida, where Suthann worked
as a contract employee.
Sheriff Wayne Ivey said Suthann became angry with an 8-year-old German shepherd when it wouldn't stand still for grooming.
Ivey said the video showed Suthann strapping the dog's head down so
tightly it couldn't move before lifting the animal off the ground by its
tail, twisting the tail and breaking it. At the end of the video, Ivey
said, Suthann struck the dog in the head with a hose nozzle.
The tail was broken so badly it had to be removed, Ivey said.
In a statement on social media, Ivey called the acts "horrific."
"The video is so graphic that I will not post it to Facebook, but
trust me when I tell you, that it is one of the most difficult things I
have ever had to watch in my 39 years of law enforcement," he said.
The German shepherd, named "T.T.," belongs to a disabled veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), Ivey said.
"The owner was devastated by the acts of cruelty against his pet and companion," he said.
"Unfortunately, the maximum bond that could be placed on Suthann was
$2,000, because they don’t let me personally set the bond amounts for
criminals like this guy!"
Ivey and Satellite Beach Police Chief Jeff Pearson personally walked Suthann into the jail Monday afternoon, Ivey said.
Ivey said Groomingdales' owners had no knowledge Suthann was capable
of cruelty and immediately fired him after learning about the incident.
A
man and a woman were arrested at a Florida airport following a luggage
dispute that delayed a flight and sent two sheriff's deputies to the
hospital, authorities said.
The incident unfolded as Ida Shafir, 67, and her companion, Nick Bogomolsky, 61, were attempting to board their Delta Air Lines flight at the Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport on Tuesday morning.
Airline
agents announced over the loud speaker that passengers would have to
check all carry-on luggage at the gate, free of charge, in order to
board the New York-bound
plane because it was full.
But Shafir "refused to check [her] luggage"
and caused "a commotion at the gate," according to the complaint
affidavit

An
airline agent took the pair aside on the jet bridge and explained they
would have to check their bags prior to boarding the flight. The agent
then contacted her manager, who arrived and noticed that Bogomolsky had
three items, more than the one-carry-on, one-personal-item permitted in
the plane's cabin, the affidavit said.
The
manager "felt the safety of the plane and the other passengers was in
jeopardy if he would allow Bogomolsky and Ida to board," so he told them
they wouldn't be allowed to board and needed to leave the jet way,
according to the affidavit.
The
airline agents contacted authorities for assistance after the pair
"refused to leave." Two deputies from the Broward County Sheriff's
Office arrived on scene and tried to deescalate the situation. One
deputy explained to Shafir she needed to leave or she would be arrested,
and Shafir dared the deputy to arrest her, the affidavit said. The
deputy attempted to handcuff Shafir but she "got out of control and
resisted arrest by tensing, bracing and pulling her hands away from
him," according to the complaint affidavit.

The
struggle went to the ground and Shafir bit the deputy on his left
forearm, drawing blood. Then Bogomolsky pushed the second deputy out of
his way and tried to grab a firearm from the holster of the deputy who
was on the floor with Shafir, the affidavit said. As the second deputy
attempted to regain control of Bogomolsky, the two ended up on the
ground as well, causing the second deputy to injure his right knee and
his right thumb, according to the affidavit.
Both deputies were transported to a local hospital.
Shafir
continued resisting arrest until multiple deputies arrived on scene and
were able to handcuff her. Bogomolsky was taken into custody. The
incident delayed the Delta Air Lines flight and disrupted normal
operations, according to the complaint affidavit.
Shafir,
who lives in Brooklyn, was charged with battery on a law enforcement
officer, resisting arrest with violence and trespassing. Bogomolsky, who
also lives in Brooklyn, was charged with robbery, resisting arrest with
violence, trespassing after warning and obstructing police, according
to the complaint affidavit.
Xochytl Greer, 36, went under five and a half hours of cosmetic surgery to undergo a nose job, liposuction on her stomach and thighs and a buttock lift.
The lawyer, who comes from Houston, Texas, has also had fillers under her eyes, in her lips and jawline, in addition to Botox.
Greer, who uses to suffer from low self confidence, says she now feels “happy” with the way she looks.

“When I look in the mirror, I’m happy again. I still see me, but a better version of me.
“I’m at the point where I feel I can put myself out there in the world again.
“Previously I felt no matter how much make-up I put on or how I fixed my hair that I wasn’t properly presentable.

“I had very big
self-confidence issues, but now I feel I can put on a nice dress and
don’t need to wear much make-up because I feel great.
While Greer admits she is still not “identical” to the Duchess of Sussex, she does think the pair have similar features.
“I don’t think I look identical to Meghan Markle, but I do see our
similarities a lot more now, my nose definitely resembles hers more
closely.

“I also had fillers in my jawline to have a stronger jaw like she does, so I do feel I more strongly resemble her now.”
She also says her youngest daughter mistakes the Duchess for her mother whenever she sees her on TV.
“Whenever my 23-month-old sees Meghan she looks at her and says ‘Mommy, mommy’.”

Pennsylvania teen found alive after five family members murdered
By Gina Cherelus and David DeKok,Reuters18 hours ago
By Gina Cherelus and David DeKok
NEW YORK (Reuters) - A teen whose mother and twin 9-year-old sisters
were among five family members killed in their Pennsylvania home was
staying at a friend's house at the time of the murders and is safe,
officials said on Tuesday.
Joshua Campbell, 17, was not at home when his aunt Shana Decree, 45,
and her daughter Dominique Decree, 19, are alleged to have murdered five
relatives in their apartment in Morrisville, about 30 miles (50 km)
northeast of Philadelphia, Bucks County District Attorney Matthew
Weintraub said.
After police found the bodies on Monday, relatives of the victims
said they had begged authorities for weeks to check on Shana Decree due
to concerns she might have fallen under the influence of a fringe
religious group.
Weintraub said finding Joshua was "one bit of good news" in what he described as an "unspeakable tragedy."
Authorities charged Decree and her daughter early on Tuesday with
five counts of homicide and one count of criminal conspiracy in the
deaths of Shana Decree's daughter, Naa'Irah Smith, 25; her son, Damon
Decree, 13; her sister, Jamilla Campbell, 42; and Campbell's twin
daughters, Imani and Erika Allen, Weintraub said.
Police were investigating the cause of the deaths and possible
motives. Asked whether it could have been a murder-suicide pact,
Weintraub said "that is a potentiality."
Both Shana and Dominique, who had visible injuries to her neck, gave
police an account of how they killed each person, prosecutors said in
court papers. The women also alleged that Decree's sister, Jamilla, had
choked one victim to death before being choked to death by Dominique.
"Shana later told police that everyone at the apartment, including
the 9-year-olds and the 13-year-old, wanted to die," prosecutors said in
an arrest affidavit. "Shana advised that all, including the children,
were talking about suicide."
WARNED CITY OFFICIALS
Shana Decree's niece, Toya Nelson, told Reuters she was beyond heartbroken.
"We've been trying to call for three weeks and I'm so angry at city
officials because we've been calling them," Nelson said in a phone
interview. "It just makes me angry because now they want to be sorry but
you had the opportunity to save them."
Nelson, 29, said she began to worry about the family after learning
from relatives that the children were no longer attending school and the
family was getting wrapped up in a fringe religious group.
She said authorities had visited the home at least two weeks ago but found no cause for concern.
The two suspects, five victims and Joshua Campbell lived together in what Weintraub described as a "tiny" apartment.
There are no other suspects in the crime, Weintraub added.
A representative for the Bucks County Children and Youth Social Services Agency did not respond to a request for comment.
Child services officials arrived at the apartment on Monday to
perform a wellness check and found the home in disarray, with broken
glass and furniture turned over, according to an arrest affidavit. They
called the police, who found the five bodies in one bedroom.
Nelson said she suspected that Shana Decree may have planned a family
murder-suicide and believed that her cousin, Dominique did not
intentionally participate in the crime.
Shana Decree was ordered held without bail and did not enter a plea
during a brief Tuesday arraignment, according to court records. Her
daughter, Dominique, was expected to be arraigned later on Tuesday.

Mystery man buys $540 worth of Girl Scout cookies so girls can 'get out of this cold'

who bought $540 of Girl Scout cookies so the girls could get out of the
cold. (Photo: Kayla Dillard via Facebook)
A man in South Carolina plunked down $540 to buy out a troop’s entire stock of Girl Scout
cookies so the girls could close up shop and escape the cold weather.
The Scouts were stationed outside a Bilo grocery store in Mauldin, S.C.
Kayla Dillard, who manages cookie sales for Troop 1574 — the group
her daughter belongs to — said in a Facebook post on Friday that the
customer first arrived and bought seven boxes of Girl Scout cookies for
$40 and told them to keep the change. But she told Yahoo Lifestyle “we
were all in total shock” when the man returned with a new offer.
The man said, “Pack up all of your cookies. I’m taking them all
so y’all can get out of this cold,” and he proceeded to buy up every
last box, including Thanks-A-Lots, Caramel deLites, Shortbread, Peanut
Butter Patties, Peanut Butter Sandwiches, S’mores, Thin Mints and
Lemonades.
“The girls were almost speechless,” Dillard told Yahoo Lifestyle. “Then they got busy trying to calculate his total.”
The final amount the man spent was $540.
“We were just thankful,” she added — but unfortunately she
doesn’t know who to thank, because she never got the man’s name and he
still hasn’t come forward. “He mentioned he owned several businesses,”
Dillard said. “We assume he was going to give the cookies away.”
Now that Dillard’s post has gone viral, internet sleuths are hard at work trying to identify the Good Samaritan. Dillard said the man has been tagged in the post several times by people who think they know him, but his identity remains a mystery.
Others were impressed by his extraordinary kindness.
“Wow, what a great big heart he has!! Kudos to him for doing
such a wonderful thing! That is something they will remember for the
rest of their lives!” one person wrote.
“This generous man probably shared the cookies with nursing
homes, his employees/coworkers, homeless shelters and friends,” another
speculated. “He seems to be a great person with a big heart.”
A mother and daughter were arrested on Monday for allegedly killing five family members in their Pennsylvania apartment, who the mother claims all "wanted to die," authorities said.
Shana
Decree, 45, and her 19-year-old daughter, Dominique Decree, allegedly
carried out a killing spree in their two-bedroom apartment in
Morrisville, Pennsylvania, about 30 miles northeast of Philadelphia.
Police
discovered the apartment in disarray with the gruesome scene during a
wellness check Monday afternoon around 4 p.m. local time.
The
victims were identified as Shana Decree's children -- Naa'Irah Smith,
25, and Damon Decree Jr., 13 -- as well as her sister -- Jamilla
Campbell, 42 -- and Campbell's 9-year-old twin daughters, Imani and
Erika Allen.

Campbell's
17-year-old son, Joshua Campbell, whose whereabouts were unknown Monday
evening, has been located and is safe, according to the Bucks County
District Attorney's Office. He was not at the apartment at the time of
the murders, Bucks County District Attorney Matthew Weintraub told
reporters Tuesday
There are no other suspects, Weintraub said.
"I just feel very confident that we have the two killers locked up that committed these atrocious, atrocious murders," he added.

During
questioning, Shana Decree told police that everyone at the apartment
"wanted to die," according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Dominique
Decree, who had visible injuries to her neck, asked police if her
family was alive and "repeatedly advised her wish to die," according to
the affidavit.
"This
is a terrible tragedy. I just spoke with the family of the five
deceased, and we're all heartbroken," Weintraub said at a press
conference late Monday. "I wish I had better news to report."

Shana
Decree was arraigned early Tuesday morning and is being held without
bail. Her daughter was expected to be arraigned later in the day.
They
each face five counts of criminal homicide and one count of conspiracy
to commit criminal homicide, according to the Bucks County District
Attorney's Office.
"I
wanted to come out here," he added, "and make sure that everybody knew
that the people that committed these atrocious acts are now in custody
and will be made to pay for their crimes."
It's unclear if either suspect has retained an attorney.
